The overarching goal of the Scientific Empowerment Movement (SEM) is to create a paradigm shift in the minds of our youth that think that science is not for them.

In today’s society, mathematics and science are integrated in many aspects of our every day lives. Developing an understanding of nature and strengthening ones’ mind through creative problem solving, model building and critical thinking techniques can be leveraged in many areas of life. Individuals that have a knack for business and science can pursue careers in venture capitalists companies, business development roles in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, marketing, intellectual property and a host of others careers that are available with a science background. As many minority youth aren’t exposed to individuals that look like them that are in these types of careers, they don’t know or believe that a career in science might exist for them.  In that regard, one of the primary goals of this movement is to expose minority youth to individuals that have taken multiple paths to their science-related career.  And that there exist individuals whom have played sports (football, basketball, etc.) in college, and have gone on to pursue science-related careers afterward. Our message is that there is no limit to what you can accomplish in life, and your job is to develop an understanding of self—what your strengths and weaknesses are—connect to your passion, and have the courage to blaze your own trail.
